A townhouse is synonymous with a townhome, and is described as real property, where there is an individual ownership interest in the unit in which you live and the land it sits on, and typically an undivided common interest in the common areas. The townhouse itself usually consists of two or more units that share common dividing walls between them. The common areas of a townhouse would typically include the surrounding land, sidewalks, open spaces, recreational facilities, and parking areas, among others. This type of ownership is a hybrid of the single-family home and the apartment, and is usually organized in the condominium form of ownership. It might be compared to living in a duplex, triplex, or fourplex type of structure with a common wall between the living units, where you actually own the unit in which you are living.

There are usually townhouse or homeowners association fees associated with townhome ownership to cover the costs of maintenance of the common areas. Costs such as exterior building maintenance, utilities for exterior lighting and/or heating or cooling of the common areas, grounds maintenance, parking area maintenance, snow removal, pool maintenance, etc. would be included in the townhouse or homeowners association fees and would be appropriately apportioned to each townhome owner based on their ownership interest in the townhouse unit.

Townhouse ownership gives the same advantages as home ownership, with typically the same tax advantages that apply to real property ownership also applying to townhome ownership.

In the Taos New Mexico area, there are few townhouses available. In fact, as of January 5, 2008, there were only 9 townhouse listings available in the entire Taos New Mexico area MLS. These ranged in price from $65,000 to $315,000.
