A horse property is defined as any property that is of sufficient size to accommodate having a horse or horses and without restrictions that would prohibit maintaining a horse or horses on the property. A horse property may be a residential property or a land property.
A quick search of the Taos MLS on January 5, 2008, for available residential and land type horse properties showed approximately 34 residential properties and 72 land properties currently available, ranging
- in price from $38,000 to $3,200,000,
- in lot size from 0.75-acres to 600-acres,
- in home size from 1,000-sq ft to 7,000-sq ft, and
- in bedrooms/bathrooms from 1-bd/1-ba to 8-bd/4-ba.
As you can see, there is a great variety of existing residential properties available in the "
horse property" category. There are even more options available if you include any farm or ranch properties, which will almost automatically be suitable for maintaining horses and other livestock.
When looking at vacant land in consideration of maintaining horses, you are typically thinking of ultimately building a residence on the property with the intent of keeping horses on the property. In this case, you must be certain that there are no restrictions against maintaining horses on the property.
Since there is currently no selection category in the Taos MLS Search feature to specifically identify these properties, your best option for finding properties that will specifically allow horses is to contact me. You can then give me your other specific requirements, such as price range, lot size, residence size and features, etc., and I will manually search the Taos MLS database to find properties suitable for maintaining horses and with the other features you seek.
As indicated above, there are numerous horse properties available in the Taos New Mexico area. While the following table is not specific to "horse properties", it does give some statistics for the immediate Taos area for improved and unimproved land properties. Many of these properties would be suitable and acceptable for maintaining horses, but each property would need to be reviewed specifically for that purpose.
